Program Description

The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a Registered Nurse educated at the Master's level as a nurse practitioner. The focus for the PMHNP is to provide a full range of holistic psychiatric-mental health care and support to individuals, families, and communities. The PMHNP is educated to provide high quality, continual and comprehensive wellness and mental illness care across the lifespan by providing preventive health services, patient education, disease management and mental illness prevention. The PMHNP is prepared to implement evidence-based practice guidelines and to critically analyze and adapt health care interventions based on individualized assessments of individual needs. The PMHNP practices in the context of community, with broad knowledge, sensitivity and awareness of the specific needs of people from diverse populations and cultural backgrounds. PMHNP delivers care that may include community health centers and clinics, private medical practices, specialty clinics, health maintenance organizations, Veteran's Administration facilities, correctional facilities, mental health facilities, and agencies that dealt with clients suffering from mental health problems.

Students must hold an active, unencumbered RN license from a WCU State-approved program and complete their clinical practicum in their State of residence [California, Texas, or Florida ]. Students must identify a clinical site in their State of residence with which the university can execute a clinical affiliation agreement.
